“Body, Mind, and Spirit”
By Fr Bruce Swinehart

If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up people to collect wood and don’t assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.
– Antoine de Saint-Exupery
People often tell me that Lent is their favorite season of the church year.  It seems we are naturally drawn towards the Lenten themes of simplicity and humility.
Some even say they like the penitential nature of the season, which is kind of odd when you think about it.  Why would a person look forward to acknowledging their own sinfulness and being sorrowful and “contrite” about it?  Wouldn’t you rather just be happy all the time?  What’s wrong with celebrating God’s goodness 52 weeks a year?

Senior Warden’s Address to 2018 Annual Parish Meeting
by Sarah Jane Delaney
January 28, 2018
Two years ago I stood before you as your new Sr. Warden.  Our Annual Meeting had just ended and it was our first Sunday without Rev. Sarah Lapenta-H.  There had been a lot of questions, a lot of emotions and not a lot of clear answers.  Our community was fractured and wondering if SMM’s best days were behind us.  Even worse, I thought, there was no specific job description or how-to manual for the Sr. Warden.  For 3 weeks we were without a priest and I would like to thank John Thornbury, Katie Schmoll, Robin Guilford, Hans L’Orange, all former Sr. Wardens and our vestry for guiding us through the doubt, confusion, and anger.
God and I talked a bunch during those days and it dawned on me that the answers to our healing and eventual thriving were not about me. It was about us, together.  It was, and still is, about “A Community Celebrating and Sharing God’s Love”.

“The Holy Spirit Moves at a Vestry Meeting”
By Fr. Bruce Swinehart
I am really looking forward to our Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday.  It’s always good to pause for a moment to reflect on how God has been working in our lives, and to pay close attention to where the Spirit might be leading us next.  Plus, I like parties with my friends!
There’s a lot of new energy and new life flowing through St Mary Magdalene these days. As the gospel hymn goes, “There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place!”  I definitely feel it on Sunday mornings, and I hope you do, too.  I feel it at Centering Prayer, at the Men’s Group, during pastoral visits, in Adult Forums, Godly Play and Youth Group, and everywhere else one might hope to encounter the Spirit in Christian community.
But I’ve also felt her presence in some surprising places. Last week it was in a Vestry meeting, talking about a budget.

“Follow Me”
By Fr. Bruce Swinehart
During the Epiphany season the Gospels tell us how Jesus began his ministry by calling disciples. Once he sets his sights on someone, he often says little more than, “Follow me!”  And they just do. They drop their nets, or whatever the tools of their trade might be, and walk away with him. Their lives are transformed in an instant.

New Book for the Wednesday Men’s Group
The Wednesday men’s group at St. Mary Magdalene has started a new book, Jesus: First Century Rabbi, by David Zaslow and will be discussing it through the month of January.  All men are welcome Wednesdays at 9:00am in the church library.  Contact Kip White for more information.

12th Annual St. Benedict Benefit
Please join us for a night of great food, music and a silent auction!  The 12th annual St. Benedict Benefit will be held at 5:50pm on Saturday, February 24, at the Avalon Ballroom (6185 Arapahoe in Boulder).  This event is always delightful and the proceeds benefit a very important ministry that provides healthcare to the homeless and working poor of Boulder County.  Tickets at $50 each and can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Larry Burgess. Thank you!
Join a Supper Club
Supper Clubs at St. Mary Magdalene are in full swing and growing!  These get-togethers occur once monthly from now until Spring.  A group of 6-8 people gathers for a meal and good conversation, which is a great way of getting to know fellow parishoners.  If you would like to begin attending a Supper Club group, please contact Carmel Hill or Kim Freymiller.
Sign Up for Coffee Hour!
Please consider providing Coffee Hour treats following the 10:00 service.  Instructions and assistance are available for making coffee and setting up.  If no one has signed up for a given Sunday on the volunteer sheet posted near the fireplace, coffee may be made, but no munchies will be furnished.  Committing to this ministry just once a year will keep us in refreshments every Sunday!  We appreciate your generosity.  Questions?  See Patti Guilford or Jane Rogers, Kitchen Co-Managers.
Bake Communion Bread!
Would you like to bake communion bread? The recipe is simple – making and baking takes about a half hour on Friday evening or early Saturday morning.  Deliver the bread to the church before 10:00 am Saturday.  It is nice too if you present it at the offertory on Sunday morning, but not necessary.  This is a wonderful expression of service and care for your church family!  Find the recipe here!  Contact Janet Poley to volunteer.

“They Looked Up”
by Fr Bruce Swinehart
Something Bishop O’Neill said in an Epiphany sermon a few years ago has stayed with me ever since.  He asked rhetorically, “What caused these Wise Men to set out on their journey? How did they find their way to Christ?”  And then he answered, “They looked up.”

“A New Creation”
By Fr Bruce Swinehart
The Lord hath yet more light and truth to break forth from his word.
– Hymn #629

I’ve been nourished and inspired by the Advent season of preparation at St Mary Magdalene.  I feel like we’re ready for a brand new Possibility to be born into our midst.
Our Wednesday evening suppers, attended by about 40 people each week, were simple and delightful gatherings that enriched us spiritually and helped knit us closer together as a community.  The “Room at the Inn” Christmas play this week was simply amazing – nearly 90 people were inspired, entertained and fed while 22 children took part in the production. Every heart prepared Him room!
Sunday Dec 24 | 4th Sunday in Advent  – One service at 10:00am (Fr. Spencer).
Sunday Dec 24 | Christmas Eve Services – 4:00pm (Family Service); 7:00pm & 10:00pm (Festival of Lessons and Carols)
Monday Dec 25 @ 10:00am | Feast of the Nativity (Fr. Spencer)
Monday Dec 25 – Tuesday Jan 2 | Church Office Closed
Sunday Dec 31 | One service @ 10:00am.

Serving on the SMM Vestry: Both Difficult and Easy
By Zach Baze
When I was asked to consider joining the SMM Vestry three years ago, I was reluctant to consider serving. I was new-ish to SMM. I was busy with two young boys and a new job. I wasn’t sure I had a lot of expertise to offer. After some prayer (and some persuading) I said yes to being considered and was elected. I’m glad I did.
Serving on the Vestry is both difficult and easy. It’s serious business but deeply rewarding. It gives you a glimpse into the entire functioning of the church and offers a deep and complete understanding of everything we do and all of the lives we touch.  It requires patience, prayer, discretion and commitment.
Sunday Dec 17 @ 9:00am | Adult Formation Series: “The Gospel of Mark” – Advent marks the beginning of Year B in our Lectionary cycle of readings, which features the Gospel of Mark. The final installment of this series will feature a presentation/discussion led by Fr Spencer.
Wednesday Dec 20 @ 6:00pm | Christmas Play: “Room at the Inn”  A musical play performed by the SMM Children and Youth – including dinner!  Email the church office with an RSVP.
Sunday Dec 24 | 4th Sunday in Advent  – One service at 10:00am (Fr. Spencer).
Sunday Dec 24 | Christmas Eve Services – 4:00pm (Family Service); 7:00pm & 10:00pm (Festival of Lessons and Carols)
Monday Dec 25 @ 10:00am | Feast of the Nativity (Fr. Spencer)
Monday Dec 25 – Tuesday Jan 2 | Church Office Closed
Sunday Dec 31 | One service @ 10:00am.
Room at the Inn: A Christmas Play
The children and youth of St Mary Magdalene will perform “Room at the Inn” at 6pm on Wednesday, December 20th and dinner will be provided.  Sign up to be in and help with the Christmas Pageant on the “CYF” bulletin board.  Sign up here to provide food for the potluck! For details contact Sue Crowley.

You can stay in touch with what’s going on throughout the Diocese, including the search process for a new Bishop, children and youth programs, community outreach and social justice initiatives, and inspiring stories from our sister churches by subscribing to the Colorado Episcopalian (digital or paper) and the weekly Diocesan Digest here:
P.S. You can read the sermon that Amy Newell-Large preached at SMM last October in the current edition of the Episcopalian.
