“Planting Seeds and Bearing Fruit”
By Sarah Jane Delaney
A year ago at this time we had invited a new Priest to join us and were hoping to build on our children’s program, welcome new members and get by on our lean budget.
A year later, we have hired our regular and wonderful nursery attendant, Jenna, added a second Godly Play classroom, gone on our first mission trip in several years, had 30 children in Vacation Bible School (our first VBS in over fifteen years) and we are expanding our middle/high school formation program!
In addition, we have a robust Welcoming Ministry, our re-established Saturday evening service continues to gain popularity, our membership is growing and I’m fielding questions in the community about calling Fr. Bruce to become our permanent rector.
A year ago we had no idea where we’d be now, but we believed in our community and the values we hold to see us through. We knew if we stayed true to those values, to our unique character, and to our mission of “Celebrating and sharing God’s love,” our community would continue to grow and thrive.
As we begin our annual stewardship season, I am reminded of something Fr. Spencer mentioned in his homily a few months ago. He said that holding an intention is like planting a seed – we can only wonder what will come of it and the lives we will touch in the future.
We have only just begun the process of updating the “vision and mission” section of our Parish Profile, but a few themes have already emerged as potential seeds for future growth. For example: continuing to grow our children and youth programming, support for additional clergy, adult education/formation, and community outreach.  Fleshing out exactly what these will look like will require more discussion, hard work, and investment.
In the meantime, I hope that you will join with me in supporting St. Mary Magdalene as we plant those seeds, shape a vision for the future, and give of ourselves to be good stewards of our community and of God’s creation. I invite each of us to consider how we can share the blessings that we ourselves have received from God to help our community, our ministries, and our mission bear the fruit that God intends for us.
Blessings,
Sarah Jane Delaney, Senior Warden

Outreach Party Sign-Ups Continue!
We had a very successful Party Sunday, with people signing up for more than $4500 in parties. Even with that only three out of the 23 events are currently full. So for the next several Sundays, someone (usually me) will be there with the sign up sheets that still have spaces so anyone can continue to sign up. I also expect to have initial letters to those who have signed up ready to distribute, with their lists of what they signed up for and how much they owe, if they didn’t pay last Sunday.  Contact Bill Andrews for more information.
SMM Supper Clubs!
Small group dinners are back! Supper Clubs (formerly KISS dinners) are groups of 6-8 individuals who will meet once a month, for at least four months, for a simple meal. The groups will decide on their own whether they want to meet at a restaurant or in a group member’s home. These gatherings are strictly social and have proven to be a great way for both new and longtime church members to get to know others. Sign-up begins September 10th and will continue through September. Groups will be then be assigned.  Contact Kim Freymiller.
Adult Formation Hour
The fall season of adult education sessions between services will begin September 17 at 9:00am with four presentation/discussions on King Henry VIII, Thomas Cranmer, Queen Elizabeth 1, and Richard Hooker.  These are not only the four most important figures in the founding of our Anglican Tradition in the English Reformation, but much of our own Episcopal theology, worship, and values can be traced back to them. Spencer Carr and Janet Poley will lead.

This is a fun, bloody murder mystery that takes place in a fictional town downriver from Leadville. Come pick Emily’s brain about writing this book! Respond to Janet Poley. Read the review here >
Our second book is The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Steadman.  Janet and Bob Poley will also host this meeting. at 7pm, Friday, Nov. 10.  Respond to Janet Poley.  This thrilling story is a profound exploration of morality, love and fear. Read the review here>

Bake Communion Bread!
Would you like to bake communion bread? The recipe is simple – making and baking takes about a half hour on Friday evening or early Saturday morning.  Deliver the bread to the church before 10:00 am Saturday.  It is nice too if you present it at the offertory on Sunday morning, but not necessary.  This is a wonderful expression of service and care for your church family!  Find the recipe here!  Contact Janet Poley to volunteer.
