In my Advent imagination, it is evening in a humble two-room home. The evening meal has been eaten and the dishes washed and put away. The aroma of spiced lentils lingers and the coals from the cooking fire gently glow. A young girl hums a simple song, perhaps a lullaby, as she fashions a child’s garment. Her older betrothed is working some wood into a small chair.
They could be any expectant couple, except for their precarious circumstance – they are not yet married – and the fact that angels have been whispering to them. They say the child will play a special role in helping to fulfill God’s purposes and promises.
