My experience at this year’s Diocesan Convention at St John’s Cathedral was rich in many ways, even transformational. Our primary order of business was, of course, the election of the 11th Bishop of Colorado. But it was the context in which that election took place that made such an impression on me.
The election itself was incorporated into a service of Holy Communion, bracketed by the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Table. As the election progressed, the proceedings fell into a rhythm of listening to instructions, casting ballots, and then waiting for 30-45 minutes for the results to be tallied and announced. As we listened, voted, and waited Bishop O’Neill continually called us back into silence, prayer, hymn-singing, chanting, or sometimes just to take a break. Sitting underneath those soaring ceilings, surrounded by beautiful stained glass and carved wood images of our faith story, I felt bathed in prayer and witnessed by the whole Communion of Saints.
There was no electioneering, no campaigning, no one speaking for or against either candidate. Only watching and waiting, staying alert for the inspiration of the Spirit.

Journey to The Promised Land: How A Homeless Stranger Took Me Home, by Carolyn Baker.
Join SMM parishioner Carolyn Baker to discuss her recent book about her unlikely friendship with a homeless man here in Boulder. It is a moving story about reconnection, forgiveness, radical ego-adjustment, and having one’s heart broken open. It is a story of what is possible when we remain willing to stay present with and surrender to what is front of us right now, and continually open to mystery and miracles.
Electronic or hard copies are available here, although it is not necessary to read the book to enjoy the forum. Copies will also be available to borrow from our library. For more information please contact Carolyn Baker.

Becoming a Member at St Mary Magdalene
Membership at St Mary Magdalene is pretty simple and straightforward. According to our church by-laws, all that’s required is regular worship OR financial contribution OR active participation in ministry. The only other thing that’s needed is the desire to identify SMM as one’s church home. Those who wish to do so come forward at the Community Blessing for a brief ceremony, then write their names in the Parish Register. If you are feeling called to become a member of St Mary Magdalene, please contact Fr Bruce. Sunday, Nov 4th would be an especially appropriate time. For more information click here.
Buy Grocery Cards to Support St. Mary Magdalene
Did you know that you can support the ministry of St. Mary Magdalene by purchasing reloadable cards for stores such as King Sooper’s? SMM will receive 5% cash back for all purchases made on these cards. For example, in the second quarter of 2018 the church received $1,289.14 in proceeds from card use. It is an easy and fantastic way to support our church community. Contact Colleen Brolin to purchase cards or to learn more.
To submit an announcement for the church calendar, Parish News, website, and bulletin, email the church office no later than 12:00pm on the Tuesday prior to desired publication. Please limit announcements to 50 words or less. If more information is needed, a document can be linked to the announcements with a full description.
