As many of you know, Daphne, Athena (Daphne’s sister) and I traveled to Southern France last month with a small group of friends to explore sites related to Mary Magdalene, the Black Madonna(s), and the Divine Feminine. I am in the process of gathering and organizing material from the trip for a presentation that we will share with the community sometime in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, on the eve of our celebration of her Feast Day, I’d like to share some impressions of Mary Magdalene and the traditions that have grown up around her in that part of the world.
A church In the Mediterranean coastal town of Stes-Marie-de-la-Mer commemorates the place where Mary Magdalene is said to have arrived in a boat that had drifted without a rudder, oars, or a sail all the way from Egypt. In this story other passengers were: the two “other Marys” who accompanied her to the empty tomb on Easter morning; her sister and brother Martha and Lazarus (conflating Mary Magdalene with Mary of Bethany); and a dark-skinned Egyptian servant girl named Sarah. From there they spread out to various places around Southern France to carry on Christ’s ministry by evangelizing, teaching, and healing.
A new Sign-Up Board is now located on the wall between the kitchen and the fireplace. Check it out and sign up for providing Altar Flowers or Coffee Hour.
Boulder Emergency Squad Staging at SMM
From 8:00am – 1:00pm on Saturday, July 21, the Boulder Rescue Squad will be staging trucks and equipment in the SMM parking lot for search and rescue training exercises being conducted in the open space across the street from the church. Please keep this in mind if needing to access the church during that time as parking may be interrupted. Thank you.
New Name Tags at SMM!
This weekend at St. Mary Magdalene you will notice new name tags on the name tag board inside the parking lot entrance. They are in order alphabetically by each individual’s last name from left to right. If your family has more than one last name you will find the name tags under the specific last name of each person.
If there is a spelling error or you are unable to locate your name tag please email the church office and we will make a new one or you.
Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
On Sunday, July 22, we will have a special worship service that morning for 9:00am – 12:00 noon which will include a “visioning process” for our community. A festive potluck will follow.
For the potluck please provide a dish of your choice of salads, fruits, and proteins for adults, as well as macaroni and cheese for children; desserts are welcome. Please label all serving dishes and pick them up near the parking lot entrance. Be sure to bring cold or warm items in containers that will maintain the food temperature.
Please plan to attend – looking forward to seeing you there!
Children, Youth and Families and SMM Feast Day
To celebrate Saint Mary Magdalene’s feast day on July 22nd, we will be having a bounce house with a water slide, along with games and art from 9am – 2pm. Please bring a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen. For more information contact Carmel Hill or Margaret Buttery.
Sign Up for Fall Supper Clubs
Sign ups for our fall dinner groups will begin on Sunday, July 22nd and continue through August 12th. Small groups of 6-8 will meet 3 or 4 times this fall for a simple meal and fellowship, in homes or restaurants. These gatherings are strictly social and are a great way to get to know other members better. For both new and longtime members! Look for the sign up sheet at the back of the sanctuary or contact Kim Freymiller or Carmel Hill for more information.
You may recall that Vestry decided in January to allocate 25% of our monthly plate offerings to Outreach. The results for the first six months are now in. Outreach has been given $2,033.62 to aid non-profit allocations. The Outreach Committee thanks you for your generosity.
Buy Grocery Cards to Support St. Mary Magdalene
Did you know that you can support the ministry of St. Mary Magdalene by purchasing reloadable cards for stores such as King Sooper’s? SMM will receive 5% cash back for all purchases made on these cards. For example, in the second quarter of 2018 the church received $1,289.14 in proceeds from card use. It is an easy and fantastic way to support our church community. Contact Colleen Brolin to purchase cards or to learn more.
