The Feast of St Mary Magdalene: How is the Spirit at Work Among Us?
By Fr Bruce Swinehart and Jim Watkins, Senior Warden
Next Sunday July 22nd we celebrate the feast day of our patroness St Mary Magdalene. She was healed by Christ of seven demons, was among the first to witness the resurrection, and became the “apostle to the apostles” by following Jesus’ command to “go and tell the others.”
This is also a time to celebrate our own community that gathers in her name, and pause to reflect on our collective life in Christ. How has Christ’s healing power been at work in and among us? How have we borne witness to new life in Christ? How have we been transformed from disciples (those who follow) into apostles (those who are sent) on behalf of the Good News?
This year some of that reflection will take place via a visioning process that will be woven into the 9:00am worship service. It will be facilitated by Ann Fleming, who is the Missioner for Transition Ministry and Congregational Development for the Diocese of Colorado (she succeeded Rev. Lou Blanchard in that position). Here are answers to some questions about the day’s activities:
What is the purpose of the visioning process?
The goal of the visioning process is to have a shared understanding of what the Spirit is doing in our midst, and how and where we are being called to embody the Risen Christ. It will help us discern our identity and our purpose, incorporating the essential characteristics and values that have formed and shaped us since the beginning as well as the dreams, gifts, and aspirations of those who are with us now.

Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
On Sunday, July 22, we will have a special worship service that morning for 9:00am – 12:00 noon which will include a “visioning process” for our community. A festive brunch will follow.
For the potluck please provide a dish of your choice of salads, fruits, and proteins for adults, as well as macaroni and cheese for children; desserts are welcome. Please label all serving dishes and pick them up near the parking lot entrance. Be sure to bring cold or warm items in containers that will maintain the food temperature.
Please plan to attend – looking forward to seeing you there!
Children, Youth and Families and SMM Feast Day
To celebrate Saint Mary Magdalene’s feast day on July 22nd, we will be having a bounce house with a water slide, along with games and art. Please bring a swimsuit, towel and sunscreen. For more information contact Carmel Hill or Margaret Buttery.
You may recall that Vestry decided in January to allocate 25% of our monthly plate offerings to Outreach. The results for the first six months are now in. Outreach has been given $2,033.62 to aid non-profit allocations. The Outreach Committee thanks you for your generosity.
Buy Grocery Cards to Support St. Mary Magdalene
Did you know that you can support the ministry of St. Mary Magdalene by purchasing reloadable cards for stores such as King Sooper’s? SMM will receive 5% cash back for all purchases made on these cards. For example, in the second quarter of 2018 the church received $1,289.14 in proceeds from card use. It is an easy and fantastic way to support our church community. Contact Colleen Brolin to purchase cards or to learn more.
New Addition to SMM Library
“The Monastery” DVD is now available to be checked out. Filmed by The Learning Channel, “The Monastery” chronicles five women who are guests for a month at The Lady of the Mississippi Abbey and documents the challenges and rewards of their retreat time. It also provides an intimate glimpse of the nuns’ lifestyle and spiritual practices of the Cistercian Order. The documentary provided for a thoughtful and lively discussion for a recent Adult Forum Series offering. For those who were unable to join us, it is now available to whoever is interested. Many thanks to our SMM librarian, Linda White, for getting it ready for checkout! Look for it on the shelf under the mirror.
