Visioning
by Jim Watkins
By now, you may have heard that we are going to have a Visioning Session at St. Mary Magdalene. It will be on Sunday, July 22, 2018, and will be part of the service for that day. The service and Visioning Session will run from 9:00AM to 12:00PM and will be followed by a pot luck luncheon celebrating St. Mary Magdalene Feast Day.
So what is this Visioning Session and why do we need it? The Visioning Session is an opportunity for all of us to determine our collective identity as a congregation and what the future of St. Mary Magdalene might look like as well as our roles in that future. It should also help us better define what we want in a Rector. We need to do this as part of the process involving Father Bruce’s evolution as a priest-in-charge. Once this vision is established, a period of discernment will be undertaken during which Father Bruce and the Vestry will separately discern whether Father Bruce should be called as our new Rector.
The Visioning Session will also give us the material we need to update our Parish Profile which the Diocese encourages us to do while we have a priest-in-charge. We will be assisted before, during, and after the Visioning Session by Ann Fleming, Missioner for Transition Ministry & Congregational Development for the Diocese. Among other things, Ann has written a pamphlet “The Priest-in-Charge Process in the Episcopal Church in Colorado: A Field Guide”.
On a related matter, we have taken some important steps towards commencing a Capital Campaign for St. Mary Magdalene. Shelby Kesterson and John Thornbury have agreed to serve as Co-Chairs of the campaign. Over the past few weeks, Shelby, John, Father Bruce, and the Vestry have interviewed three candidates to serve as a consultant for our campaign. At our June Vestry meeting, we decided to use Jeff Hensley, who is an employee of Generis, a company located in the Atlanta, Georgia area.
While there will be lots more information regarding the Capital Campaign coming in the future, it does tie in with our Visioning Session as we expect to get some ideas for our Capital Campaign from our Visioning Session.
Please put the July 22 Visioning Session and celebratory luncheon on your calendar. It should be an important day for our collective futures as a congregation.
Jim Watkins, Senior Warden

Feast of St. Mary Magdalene

On Sunday, July 22, we will have a special worship service that morning for 9:00am – 12:00 noon which will include a “visioning process” for our community. A festive brunch will follow. Activities and games for children will be provided.  Please plan to attend – looking forward to seeing you there!

Thank you for supporting Outreach and CHP

At the May meeting of Outreach, we voted to send a check for $13,445 to Colorado Haiti Project, the grand total of parishioners’ and others’ contributions. More than 33 scholarships were funded by the congregation and another 5 scholarships came from Outreach matching funds, for a total of more than 38 scholarships. A heartfelt thank you for continuing to generously “celebrate and share God’s love” with the students in Petit Trou, Haiti! We also voted to send $1,000 to Friends of HEPAC (Home of Hope and Peace) in Nogales, Mexico, where the mission trip went last year and plans to go again this year. The funds will be used to repair a foundation wall that is crumbling before the rainy season begins.

The next Outreach meeting will be July 9 at 7 pm in the sanctuary. On July 9, we’ll meet to review applications for a special $5,200 grant using the distribution to Outreach from SMM Endowment Funds. Our last grant of Endowment Funds built a community playground at an apartment complex for low-income families in Lafayette. Please come help review applications, if you’d like to be part of this interesting and gratifying process! For more information contact Amy Thornbury.

Buy Grocery Cards to Support St. Mary Magdalene
Did you know that you can support the ministry of St. Mary Magdalene by purchasing reloadable cards for stores such as King Sooper’s?  SMM will receive 5% cash back for all purchases made on these cards.  For example, in the first quarter of 2018 the church received $1,346.57 in proceeds from card use.  It is an easy and fantastic way to support our church community.  Contact Colleen Brolin to purchase cards or to learn more.
New Addition to SMM Library

“The Monastery” DVD is now available to be checked out.   Filmed by The Learning Channel, “The Monastery” chronicles five women who are guests for a month at The Lady of the Mississippi Abbey and documents the challenges and rewards of their retreat time.  It also provides an intimate glimpse of the nuns’ lifestyle and spiritual practices of the Cistercian Order. The documentary provided for a thoughtful and lively discussion for a recent Adult Forum Series offering.  For those who were unable to join us, it is now available to whoever is interested.  Many thanks to our SMM librarian, Linda White, for getting it ready for checkout!  Look for it on the shelf under the mirror.

Family Separation: The Episcopal Church Responds
by Fr. Bruce Swinehart
In my homily last Sunday I referenced our government’s new policy of separating children from their parents when they are apprehended crossing the border illegally, and sometimes when they are making asylum claims.  Parents are rarely told where their children are taken, how long they will be separated, or how to find out where they are. Some people have reported that they were told their children were being taken for a bath, and they simply never returned. Infants and toddlers have been separated from their parents for months at a time, and are sometimes held even after the parent has been deported back to their home country.
This policy is needlessly cruel and inhumane, and is troubling to all people of good conscience. Franklin Graham,  the most prominent conservative Evangelical supporter of the administration, has called this practice “disgraceful.” Here are a few responses from the Episcopal Church:
An article from the  Episcopal News Service, which includes a preview of action that could be taken at the upcoming General Convention:
statement signed by Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and other faith leaders across a wide spectrum of denominations.
contact form from the Episcopal Church’s Office of Government relations that will help expedite your communication to your elected officials.
I encourage all of us to bear witness to the Gospel in the midst of this situation, however and wherever we feel so called, remembering especially Luke 18:15-16:
“People were bringing even infants to him that he might touch them; and when the disciples saw it, they sternly ordered them not to do it. But Jesus called for them and said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.'”
Blessings,
Bruce+

Celebrate Summer Solstice with St. Brigit’s

In keeping with the Celtic tradition of honoring the earth as God’s creation, St. Brigit will mark the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, as a celebration of God’s gift of light.  The Solstice Service is unique among the Áit Caol services in that all the meditation areas will be outdoors on the church grounds, including one utilizing St. Brigit’s outdoor labyrinth.  St. Brigit’s youth group, the Lightsiderz, will be assisting in creating the meditation areas.  Older children are welcome at the service.  Childcare will be provided for children under age six.  Read more >

Traveling
by Fr. Bruce Swinehart
I will be traveling for most of June, and wanted to share a bit about where I’ll be going and what I’ll be up to.
Monday through Friday of next week (June 4-8) I’ll be in Boston for an annual retreat with some seminary colleagues.  The five of us comprised a Spiritual Formation Group for much of our time at Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, until we graduated in 2009. We prayed and studied together, got each other through some tough times, and celebrated our milestones and achievements.  This will be our 6th annual retreat, and each time we get together we pick up right where we left off.
