Membership and Belonging, Part III
By Fr Bruce Swinehart
A couple of weeks ago, I wrote that St Mary Magdalene is initiating a new process that enables people to identify themselves as members of the parish if they so desire.
To recap, our parish by-laws state that members of St Mary Magdalene are all those who “worship regularly with the community or support the life of the community financially or actively participate in the ministry of the community.”  The primary purpose of this definition is to identify those who are eligible to vote at our Annual Meeting or whenever parish business is conducted, but it also serves as a useful guideline to how we understand membership in general.  So far, so good.
But we’ve been lacking some kind of method whereby people can actually declare themselves to be members and have their membership recorded somewhere.

New Song at SMM!
On Sunday, May 20, a new song, Enemy of Apathy, will be introduced at the 10am service.  Please follow this link to take a listen and familiarize yourself with the tune.  We are thankful for all of your beautiful voices that lend to our ethos of congregational singing at St. Mary Magdalene.

In celebration of our last day of Godly Play and Youth Group for the school year and as a thank you to our wonderful volunteer teachers, we will have an ice cream party after the 10 am service on Sunday, May 20.  Can you say Sweet Cow Moo Mobile?  We will be accepting cash donations to help offset cost out of  the children and youth budget. Thank You for Supporting Common Cathedral
Common Cathedral, that we have supported for many years, has decided to end its Friday night services.  Please keep the participants and parishioners in your prayers.  The Outreach Community would like to recognize the volunteers and donors to Common Cathedral today for all the energy, love and life they gave to this important outreach.
If anyone has an organization that they would like to recommend and champion for further interactive outreach, please let us know.  Contact Mark Christie.
New Addition to SMM Library

“The Monastery” DVD is now available to be checked out.   Filmed by The Learning Channel, “The Monastery” chronicles five women who are guests for a month at The Lady of the Mississippi Abbey and documents the challenges and rewards of their retreat time.  It also provides an intimate glimpse of the nuns’ lifestyle and spiritual practices of the Cistercian Order. The documentary provided for a thoughtful and lively discussion for a recent Adult Forum Series offering.  For those who were unable to join us, it is now available to whoever is interested.  Many thanks to our SMM librarian, Linda White, for getting it ready for checkout!  Look for it on the shelf under the mirror.

SMM Book Club
Marge and Ed Szoke have selected a GREAT book for the Book Club!  American Savior, a novel of divine Politics, by Roland Merullo. The premise is: Jesus Christ comes down to America and is running for president as an independent. It is quite humorous with themes of religion and politics, and a little bit of sex thrown in to help it sell.  Marge and Ed will host us at 7pm, Friday, May 18, at their home.  Respond, please, to Ed and Marge. New Adult Forum: Mental Health Awareness Month

I recently mentioned to a group of acquaintances at work that my church was doing a series on Mental Health Awareness. Some of their comments were as follows:
“Really? At church?”
“Wow – that’s one of the last places where things like that are talked about!”
“Church seems like the place where everyone tries to put on their best face”.

Please join us for adult forum Sunday May 20th as a panel of parishioners model for us this kind of church community – and as they share their wisdom and their insights around the navigation of mental health challenges. Hope to see you there!   Read more here >

The Episcopal Church Welcomes You
Fr Bruce will offer a 5-session series for adults called “The Episcopal Church Welcomes You” on Wednesdays May 9th-June 13th from 6:30-8:30pm.  The series will explore topics such as church history, spirituality, how we read the Bible, engagement with culture and society, and church organization. We will use “Your Faith, Your Life: An Invitation to the Episcopal Church,” (Revised 2017) by Jennifer Gamber as our guide.
The course would be especially good preparation for anyone wishing to be received into the Church or confirmed by Bishop O’Neill on June 9th, but all are welcome. Please RSVP to Fr Bruce at
