An Update from Sr. Warden Jim Watkins

During the past few weeks, several people have asked me what the Vestry plans to do in 2018. I will try to answer that question recognizing that my answer will be incomplete as there will be unexpected issues that come up later in the year that the Vestry will have to address.

The Vestry’s most important activity in 2018 will be to continue to lead the discernment process regarding Father Bruce’s current role as Priest-in-Charge and a possible call to be our permanent Rector. That activity, which has been going on since Father Bruce joined us in 2016, will involve Father Bruce, the Vestry, our congregation, and the Episcopal Diocese of Colorado.
The Vestry will be overseeing the planning of a Capital Campaign to raise funds to pay for the deferred maintenance and improvements we would like to do to our building. Many of you will be involved in that campaign in some capacity. More information will be forthcoming.
We are currently completing revisions to our Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws and completing a new Building Use Policy. We plan to create a Gift Designation Policy so that we know what to do when we receive an undesignated gift. We are also updating our Parish Profile. Several of these items were started in 2017 and we hope to complete them in 2018.
The Vestry has plans to oversee the activities of our many Committees. Each Vestry member has volunteered to be the liaison for one or more Committees. We anticipate that the Vestry member will contact the Committee chair and open a dialogue about the Committee with a goal of helping address committee needs and provide an additional channel of communications.
Other activities include reviewing our financial statements every month, making sure that we conduct our annual Stewardship campaign, and hopefully, listening to and addressing the concerns expressed by the congregation.
Vestry meetings are scheduled for the second Tuesday of every month (although our April meeting will be the third Tuesday, April 17) at 6:30PM and are open to all. We welcome your attendance and input.
Peace to all.

Fr Bruce’s Upcoming Schedule
Fr Bruce and Daphne will be away on a post-Easter retreat April 5-11. Rev. Sarah Berlin will preach and preside at both services on April 8th.
Seder Supper with St. John’s Episcopal Church
St. John’s Boulder has invited the SMM community to join them for a potluck Seder Supper at the Barcelona House (St. Ambrose property) at 5:30 pm on Friday, April 6 .  This is intended to be a fun, family event hosted by their Level III Sunday School children.   Please RSVP to Sue Crowley at  and she will let our generous hosts know who is coming.

Update Your Birthdays and Anniversaries with SMM

In an effort to keep accurate lists of birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate with our community, cards will be on the Welcome Table by the front entrance to the sanctuary to provide updated information.  Please take a moment to complete one for yourself and your family and place it in the offering basket during the month of April.  If you would like to submit the information digitally, click here for a sample and email the info to Sarah Jane Delaney.  Thank you for helping us update our records to celebrate together!

Second Sunday Women’s Gathering

All women of St. Mary Magdalene are warmly invited to the Second Sunday Women’s Gathering Sunday, April 8, at 11:30am. Join us in the library for a light lunch and heartfelt discussion, while getting to know some of the other wonderful women in our community.  Contact Roxanne Bamond.
Colorado Haiti Project Fundraiser
Please stay for a Haitian-themed lunch and presentation about  the Colorado Haiti Project on April 15 after the 10 am service.  Front Range Catering is preparing and donating delicious traditional Haitian chicken for the event. This is our annual kick-off to raise scholarships for students at the Episcopal church school in Petit Trou de Nippes in rural Haiti. We’ve proudly supported an entire class in years past. Our goal is to send 30 students to this school, recognized as one of the best in the region. A full scholarship is $350, but donations in any amount are welcome before, during, and after the event.  Checks can be made payable to St. Mary Magdalene with CHP/Konbit in the memo line. Please RSVP on the clipboards at church so we have an approximate count, but plan to attend even if you haven’t signed up!  Contact Amy Thornbury.
Newcomers’ Brunch
If you consider yourself a Newcomer, whether you have attended for three months or three years, and you have questions about further exploring your commitment to the community of St. Mary Magdalene, join us at 11:00am on Sunday, April 22, for a brunch and meaningful discussion about what it means to be a member of this community.  Contact Sarah Jane Delaney with questions and to RSVP.
SMM Book Club
Marge and Ed Szoke have selected a GREAT book for the Book Club!  American Savior, a novel of divine Politics, by Roland Merullo. The premise is: Jesus Christ comes down to America and is running for president as an independent. It is quite humorous with themes of religion and politics, and a little bit of sex thrown in to help it sell.  Marge and Ed will host us at 7pm, Friday, May 18, at their home.  Respond, please, to Ed and Marge.
Real Parenting: Love and Logic Parenting Class
Wildflower Preschool is offering a 5 week Love and Logic parenting class taught by Stephanie Bryan beginning Thursday, April 12 at 5:30pm.  Parishioners of St. Mary Magdalene are invited to join this class discussing parenting of 0-6 year old children.  Find more information and registration instructions here.

Save the Date: VBS 2018!

It’s that time of year again!  Vacation Bible School at SMM is happening June 5th, 6th, & 7th from 4-7 PM. This program is open to entering 1st-5th graders and 6th-12th grade as camp leaders. For more information contact Sue Crowley.
Mission Trip to Nogales AZ/Mexico: July 30-August 4

We are planning another “border immersion” trip to Nogales, a city on both sides of the US/Mexico border.  We will learn how legal and illegal immigration affects on life along the border, talk with migrants, walk migrant trials, and visit a sister Episcopal church. We’ll stay at a community center on the Mexico side, and work with the children there.  Please contact Fr Bruce to reserve a space or to learn more. Last year the cost was roughly $600/person, including airfare.  Click here to see a recent article by the New York Times about Nogales.

Support Community Food Share
Looking for an easy way to support Outreach? Please remember the SMM Food Pantry basket in your weekly grocery shopping! Donations such as cereal, peanut butter, soup, canned tuna and chicken, rice, and baby food/formula are especially needed. Place sealed, non-perishable items only in the basket at the back of church in the entry way. Thank you!
