“The Holy Spirit Moves at a Vestry Meeting”
By Fr. Bruce Swinehart
I am really looking forward to our Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday.  It’s always good to pause for a moment to reflect on how God has been working in our lives, and to pay close attention to where the Spirit might be leading us next.  Plus, I like parties with my friends!
There’s a lot of new energy and new life flowing through St Mary Magdalene these days. As the gospel hymn goes, “There’s a sweet, sweet spirit in this place!”  I definitely feel it on Sunday mornings, and I hope you do, too.  I feel it at Centering Prayer, at the Men’s Group, during pastoral visits, in Adult Forums, Godly Play and Youth Group, and everywhere else one might hope to encounter the Spirit in Christian community.
But I’ve also felt her presence in some surprising places. Last week it was in a Vestry meeting, talking about a budget.

A new Sign-Up Board is now located on the wall between the kitchen and the fireplace.  Check it out and sign up to provide Altar Flowers or Coffee Hour.
Annual Parish Meeting: Sunday, January 28th, 11:30am-1:30pm
Come celebrate our community and help conduct parish business. We’ll reflect on the past year, cast a vision for the future, elect Vestry members, Wardens, and Convention Delegates and approve our 2018 operating budget. This will be a great opportunity to learn about the many programs and ministries at SMM, and become more engaged.
The festivities will begin with a potluck brunch – please sign up here or on the welcome table to provide food and sign up for childcare.
Adult Forum Series:
Meetings with Remarkable Anglican-Episcopalians:
A new Adult Formation series at 9am on Sundays through February 11 will introduce us to influential thinkers, preachers, and leaders who are shaping our Anglican-Episcopal tradition today. Each session will include a video interview, sermon, or presentation followed by discussion.
  • January 21 – BBC interview with Justin Welby, 105th Archbishop of Canterbury and head of the worldwide Anglican Communion. NOTE: This video was very well received last Sunday – you can click here to watch.
  • January 28 –  Interview with Desmond Tutu, Archbishop of Cape Town South Africa and spiritual leader of the anti-apartheid movement.
  • February 4 – Nadia Bolz-Weber, iconoclastic founding pastor of the House for All Sinners and Saints in Denver, interviewed by Krista Tippett of “On Being.”
  • February 11 – A presentation by Cynthia Bourgault, an Episcopal priest from Colorado, teacher and writer on Centering Prayer, and author of The Meaning of Mary Magdalene.

Youth-Led Worship Service!
It’s that time of year again, where the youth take over the 10 am service on January 28.  Please contact Sue Crowley to sign up.

“My Faith, My Life” for Teens
All middle and high schoolers are invited to join Sue and Fr. Bruce Sundays from 12:00 to 1:30pm, February 4-25, for a lunch series exploring questions of faith and the Episcopal Church, with the option of continuing on to confirmation.  For questions & to RSVP please contact Sue Crowley.
New Book for the Wednesday Men’s Group
The Wednesday men’s group at St. Mary Magdalene has started a new book, Jesus: First Century Rabbi, by David Zaslow and will be discussing it through the month of January.  All men are welcome Wednesdays at 9:00am in the church library.  Contact Kip White for more information.

12th Annual St. Benedict Benefit
Please join us for a night of great food, music and a silent auction!  The 12th annual St. Benedict Benefit will be held at 5:50pm on Saturday, February 24, at the Avalon Ballroom (6185 Arapahoe in Boulder).  This event is always delightful and the proceeds benefit a very important ministry that provides healthcare to the homeless and working poor of Boulder County.  Tickets at $50 each and can be purchased at the door or in advance by contacting Larry Burgess or on the website: Thank you!
St. Benedict Silent Auction: Donations Needed!
St. Benedict Health and Healing Ministry is seeking your generous auction donations for our crucial annual St. Benedict Benefit fundraiser on February 24, 2018.   Perhaps you could donate a weekend at a vacation home, tickets to a sports or theatre event, jewelry or a beautiful piece of art.  These are just a few ideas.  Please contact Beth Kimberly (silent auction co-coordinator) at St. Benedict to discuss any potential donations with us. Many thanks for your consideration; we depend on your help! For more information about St. Benedict’s work please visit  Thank you!
Join a Supper Club
Supper Clubs at St. Mary Magdalene are in full swing and growing!  These get-togethers occur once monthly from now until Spring.  A group of 6-8 people gathers for a meal and good conversation, which is a great way of getting to know fellow parishoners.  If you would like to begin attending a Supper Club group, please contact Carmel Hill or Kim Freymiller.
Sign Up for Coffee Hour!
Please consider providing Coffee Hour treats following the 10:00 service.  Instructions and assistance are available for making coffee and setting up.  If no one has signed up for a given Sunday on the volunteer sheet posted near the fireplace, coffee may be made, but no munchies will be furnished.  Committing to this ministry just once a year will keep us in refreshments every Sunday!  We appreciate your generosity.  Questions?  See Patti Guilford or Jane Rogers, Kitchen Co-Managers.
Bake Communion Bread!
Would you like to bake communion bread? The recipe is simple – making and baking takes about a half hour on Friday evening or early Saturday morning.  Deliver the bread to the church before 10:00 am Saturday.  It is nice too if you present it at the offertory on Sunday morning, but not necessary.  This is a wonderful expression of service and care for your church family!  Find the recipe here!  Contact Janet Poley to volunteer.
