Generosity and Gratitude
By Fr. Bruce Swinehart
St Mary Magdalene is a generous congregation.  Last Sunday, we raised $2400 to support Episcopal Relief and Development’s hurricane relief efforts (you can still contribute by writing a check to St Mary Magdalene, with “hurricane relief” in the memo line).  We also raised $4200 for SMM Outreach grants through “Party Sunday” sign-ups.  And this number will rise as people continue to sign up to attend Outreach Parties (look for the Outreach table on Sunday).
It’s amazing how readily people respond when they’re asked to give to a cause they believe in by an organization they trust.
The same is true of all the ways people give to our church.  The amount of “invisible” work done by so many people to keep our community going – and growing – is truly impressive. This week I invited a parishioner to consider taking on a ministry role, and although they didn’t say yes right away, they did say, “I’ll consider it because I love this place.”  I hear that a lot, and it is always gratifying.
When we launch our annual Stewardship Campaign next week, each of us will be invited to consider contributing time, talent, and treasure to sustain St Mary Magdalene’s mission of “celebrating and sharing God’s love.”  I hope you will carefully consider that invitation in the light of your love for this place, and your belief that we are faithfully walking in the Way of Jesus.
In the meantime, please know how deeply grateful I am for all that you do and give and are in our community and in the world.

Outreach Party Sign-Ups Continue!
There is still plenty of time to sign up to attend Outreach Parties.  Contact Bill Andrews for more information.
Join the SMM Choir!
The St Mary Magdalene Choir is a singing group for people who enjoy fun, community, and making music! We are currently looking for new members to join our ranks! No musical background required! Just a smile, pencil, and water bottle are all you need! Our next rehearsals is September 14 and we will sing at the 10am service on Sunday, September 17. Please contact Matt after service or via email with questions or to sign up!  Check out this year’s schedule here.
SMM Supper Clubs!
Small group dinners are back! Supper Clubs (formerly KISS dinners) are groups of 6-8 individuals who will meet once a month, for at least four months, for a simple meal. The groups will decide on their own whether they want to meet at a restaurant or in a group member’s home. These gatherings are strictly social and have proven to be a great way for both new and longtime church members to get to know others. Sign-up begins September 10th and will continue through September. Groups will be then be assigned.  Contact Kim Freymiller.
Godly Play Workshop
Please join Dennis, Julia and Sue on Saturday, September 16th from 9am to 12pm for a thoughtful and fun Godly Play refresher workshop for all current and new volunteers!  Light breakfast and snack will be provided.  Please RSVP to this event via Sue Crowley.
There will be an additional one hour training offered at 6:30pm on Tuesday, September 19, for those unable to make the Saturday workshop.
Adult Formation Hour
The fall season of adult education sessions between services will begin September 17 at 9:00am with four presentation/discussions on King Henry VIII, Thomas Cranmer, Queen Elizabeth 1, and Richard Hooker.  These are not only the four most important figures in the founding of our Anglican Tradition in the English Reformation, but much of our own Episcopal theology, worship, and values can be traced back to them. Spencer Carr and Janet Poley will lead.
Second Sunday Women’s Gathering
All women of St. Mary Magdalene are warmly invited to the Second Sunday Women’s Gathering THIS SUNDAY, September 17, 11:30am-1:00pm. Join us in the library after the service for a light lunch, where contributions of simple fare to share are welcome. Our topic this week will be the Autumnal Equinox (September 22) and its symbolic parallels in our own lives. Child care is available. Contact Ann Cairns.

SMM Book Club

Our next book is Inherit the Bones by Emily Littlejohn. Emily WILL BE WITH US at the club meeting! Janet and Bob Poley are hosting in their home at 7pm, Friday, September 29 (date change). This is a fun, bloody murder mystery that takes place in a fictional town downriver from Leadville. Come pick Emily’s brain about writing this book! Respond to Janet Poley. Read the review here >
Our second book is The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Steadman.  Janet and Bob Poley will also host this meeting. at 7pm, Friday, Nov. 10.  Respond to Janet Poley.  This thrilling story is a profound exploration of morality, love and fear. Read the review here>
Youth Event at Gateway Park
Calling all youth!  Join us after coffee hour on September 24 and we’ll hit the road for some fall fun at Gateway Park.  Bring money for lunch, mini golf and games.  Contact Sue Crowley.
Music Night and Birthday Celebration
Music nights are back at St. Mary Magdalene!  This year’s kickoff will also include a celebration of Fr. Bruce’s 60th birthday!  Join us for food, fellowship, and great music at the church starting at 6:30pm on September 30.  There will be an open mic session so bring your instrument, voice, and a song to share with the community.  More details to come!
Feast of St. Francis and Animal Blessing
Join us at 5:00pm on Saturday, October 7, for the annual Blessing of the Animals.  All pets are welcome!
Bake Communion Bread!
Would you like to bake communion bread? The recipe is simple – making and baking takes about a half hour on Friday evening or early Saturday morning.  Deliver the bread to the church before 10:00 am Saturday.  It is nice too if you present it at the offertory on Sunday morning, but not necessary.  This is a wonderful expression of service and care for your church family!  Find the recipe here!  Contact Janet Poley to volunteer.
