Looking Ahead
by Fr. Bruce Swinehart
In case you have not heard, school starts next week.  I know!  I’m as surprised as anyone.  As summer winds down and the program year approaches, here are a few things to look forward to at St Mary Magdalene:
Sunday, September 10: “Reconnecting Sunday”
We return to two services at 8:00am and 10:00am and kick off the program year.  This will also be “Party Sunday,” when the Outreach Committee hosts a festive brunch and invites everyone to sign up to attend one or more parties to benefit SMM’s Outreach activities.
Children, Youth and Family Ministries
Sue Crowley will write an article for next week’s newsletter that will give an overview of programs and activities being planned for the coming year.  Among the highlights: a new opportunity for Middle and High School youths to gather on Sunday mornings, and training opportunities for classroom volunteers.
Adult Formation
Fr Spencer Carr, Janet Poley, Cheryl Flink, and I have been working together to develop a variety of spiritual and faith formation opportunities.  We’re focusing primarily on two venues: (1) short programs each Sunday between services that could last 2-4 weeks, and (2) an 8-week evening series (September 27-November 15) exploring the unique expression of Christian faith embodied by our Anglican/Episcopal tradition and St. Mary Magdalene. This will be open to all, but especially geared toward newer members. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
Dinner Groups
As we continue to weave the fabric of our community together, we will be reviving an SMM tradition called Keep it Simple Suppers (aka “KISS Dinners”). This is a simple, fun way for folks to get to know each other a little better. Anyone who wishes to participate is invited to sign up. Groups of 6-8 are then assigned and meet monthly from October through May.
Music Program
You’ll be hearing more soon from Music Director Matt Witherow about plans for our music program in the coming year.  One exciting project is a new edition of “Songs for Worship,” which will include as many as 100 new songs that are in keeping with SMM’s musical traditions.  We will also be including a select number of hymns from the Hymnal 1982.  We hope to have the new songbook completed and published by Advent.
Parish Profile Update
As Sarah Jane Delaney wrote last week, discussion groups are currently being convened to help us articulate our unique identity as a community in Christ, and where the Spirit might be leading us. You’ll be hearing more about the results of these discussions (and related data gathering) in September, in time for our annual Stewardship Campaign. Speaking of which…
Our annual Stewardship Campaign will run from September 17th through October 8th, led by Bob Poley and Pete Morreale.  But it’s never too early – or too late – to offer a gift of gratitude to support God’s work among us.
I’m looking forward to taking some much needed rest over the next two-plus weeks.  And I’m excited for all the good things God has in store for us in the weeks and months ahead.  I remain blessed to be on this journey with all of you.
God is Good,
Fr. Bruce’s Vacation Schedule
Fr. Bruce will be away on vacation from August 15th to 30th. Rev. Spencer Carr will preach and preside on Sunday, August 20th. Rev. Lada Hardwick will celebrate on August 27th. Spencer+ and Lada+ will also provide coverage for pastoral emergencies during Fr. Bruce’s absence.

In Memory of Leonora McKeever
Please hold Patti Guilford and her family in your thoughts and prayers as her mother, Leonora McKeever, passed away this week in Medford, Oregon.
“Almighty God, our Father in heaven, before whom live all who die in the Lord: receive our sister Leonora into the courts of your heavenly dwelling place. Let her heart and soul now ring out in joy to you, O Lord, the living God and the God of those who live. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.”
Parish Profile Update Meetings
All parishioners of St. Mary Magdalene are invited to join us tonight, August 10, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the discussion of updating our Parish Profile.  Two additional dates have been set for Wednesday, August 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m and Sunday, August 27, 10:30-noon in hopes that as many as possible may join in the discussion. Childcare will be provided if you would let me know which date needed.) Contact Sarah Jane Delaney for more information.

Saturday Evening Service Planning
There will be an informal gathering on Saturday, August 12th, following the 5:00pm service for anyone who wishes to discuss the liturgy for the Contemplative Eucharist. We’re considering updating the service while maintaining its intimate, contemplative character. Light refreshments will be provided. If you are unable to attend but would like to add your input, please contact Mary Hardy.
Return to the School Year Backpack Blessing
It’s that time of year … Back to School!  Returning students of all ages and teachers please bring your backpacks to service on Sunday, August 13th for a blessing to get your school year started right
2nd Sunday Women’s Gathering
All women of St. Mary Magdalene are warmly invited this Sunday, August 13, 10:30am-12:00pm. Join us in the library for a light lunch, where contributions of simple fare to share are welcome. (No fussing or stressing is permitted!) Our topic this month will be the seven days of creation and what the symbolism suggests about our own creativity. Contact Ann Cairns for details.
SMM Book Club
Our next book is Inherit the Bones by Emily Littlejohn. Emily WILL BE WITH US at the club meeting! Janet and Bob Poley are hosting in their home at 7pm, Friday, September 15. This is a bloody murder mystery that takes place in a fictional town downriver from Leadville. Contact Janet or Bob for more information.
Bake Communion Bread!
Would you like to bake communion bread? The recipe is simple – making and baking takes about a half hour on Friday evening or early Saturday morning.  Deliver the bread to the church before 10:00 am Saturday.  It is nice too if you present it at the offertory on Sunday Morning, but not necessary.  This is a wonderful expression of service and care for your church family!  Find the recipe here!  Contact Janet Poley to volunteer.
