St. Mary Magdalene: In-Between and Crossing Over
by Carolyn Kesterson
Again, this coming Sunday, we will hold stones in our hands as we consider what where God’s plan has taken us so far and what our new intentions might be.  We might consider what the past year has brought us-a new and welcome priest, a sturdy children’s ministry, and new faces most Sunday mornings.  Old friendships continue and new ones are forming, we still come around one another when our loved ones pass away, and we break bread in the sanctuary and eat casseroles under the tent.  We reach out to other communities in need all around the world, and we devote ourselves to the spirit and passion of Mary Magdalene with generosity, faith, and all-out engagement.  Like her, we do not have to look very far to know who we are when we can take root in a new land and say, “I have seen the Lord.”  Read more >
SMM Directory Update
As the photo sessions come to a close we are updating our database to ensure that the information published in the new directory is as accurate as possible. The current edition of the weekly Parish News has a link and password for an encrypted document containing the directory information.  You will also find a paper copy on the welcome table on Sunday, July 23 with a blank sheet to enter any changes.
Please take a moment to verify your information is correct.  If you don’t have access to the directory information through the weekly Parish News or the paper copy, please contact the church office.
If your information needs to be updated please email the changes to the church office by 12:00pm on Wednesday, July 26.
If you have children under the age of 19 and would like their names included with your family information in the directory please email and let the church office know by 12:00pm on Wednesday, July 26!
Thank you all for participating in this year’s church directory!

Feast of St. Mary Magdalene
Sunday, July 23rd marks the Feast of St Mary Magdalene, our “matron saint.” We’ll celebrate the occasion with a labyrinth walk at 8:00am, special observances at the 9:00am service, and a festive potluck brunch following the service.  Please sign up to provide an egg dish (breakfast casserole, etc), muffins, or fruit to share on this fun occasion. The sign-up sheet will be in the entryway on Sunday morning, and on the bulletin board by the office during the week. Due to limited oven space, bring your egg dishes wrapped and insulated to keep them warm until the potluck. Contact Kay Ingram with questions.
Funeral Service for Jack Thornbury
Jack Thornbury’s funeral has been scheduled for Saturday, July 29th at 11:00am at St Mary Magdalene, with a reception following. The Thornbury family appreciates your continued prayers and support.  Please bring a plate of cookies or brownies to share during the reception following.  Contact Patti Guilford.
Acolyte Appreciation Party – POSTPONED
Thank you very much for devoting your time and energy to the SMM Acolyte Team! The party has been postponed to a date to be determined so all are available to attend the Thornbury memorial.
Haiti Scholarship Fundraiser Continues!
So far, SMM parishioners have generously given 20 Konbit Scholarships for students at St. Paul’s School in Petit Trou. We’re halfway to our goal! Over the next few weeks, the Outreach Committee will continue to raise funds for Konbit scholarships. If you still want to donate but didn’t have a chance yet, please send in a check payable to SMM with “CHP” in the memo line. Each scholarship is $350, and donations of any amount are welcome! Questions? Please contact Mark Christie.

Directed by Jeanie Balch, parishioner of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church, CenterStage’s production of Godspell delivers a message of hope, solidarity and community.  This production features new music and updated material from the Tony Award winning 2011 Broadway revival, written by Michael Tebelak.   The tuneful score, written by Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin), takes most of its lyrics from the Episcopal Hymnal, with such memorable songs as “Day by Day,” “All Good Gifts,” “Turn Back, O Man,” “O Bless the Lord, My Soul,” and more.

Godspell plays at the Louisville Center for the Arts. Evening performances are July 27, 29, 30, Aug 2, 3, 4, 5 at 7:30pm, with one “late-night” performance at 9:15pm on July 28, and one matinee on August 6 at 1:30pm.  Tickets are $15-$25 and are available at the door or online.  For more information contact Jeanie Balch.
SMM Book Club
Our next book is The Women in the Castle by Jessica Shattuck. Pat and Al Jefferson are hosting. 7pm, Friday, August 4. This tells the story of three war widows, and their children, who take refuge in the ruins of a Bavarian castle at the end of World War II. Contact Al or Pat Jefferson.
Bake Communion Bread!
We need some more bread bakers!  We need bread for each week in July, August and September. The recipe is simple – making and baking takes about a half hour on Friday evening or early Saturday morning.  Deliver the bread to the church before 10:00 am Saturday.  It is nice too if you present it at the offertory on Sunday Morning, but not necessary.  This is a wonderful expression of service and care for your church family!  Find the recipe here!  Contact Janet Poley to volunteer.
