Hard Teachings
Fr. Bruce Swinehart
We’ve heard some hard Scripture readings in church recently.  Be prepared –  more are coming.
This Sunday we’ll hear the story of the “binding of Isaac.” God tests Abraham’s faith by instructing him to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac, but then intervenes at the last minute to spare the boy.  While Abraham’s faith is admirable, the God to whom he is faithful seems like he might be some kind of monster.
Although scripture passages like this are challenging, in our tradition we choose to engage them rather than passing them over.  We don’t select our Sunday readings according to what our “itching ears” want to hear, or to help the preacher make a particular point (I wish!).  Instead, we use a prescribed cycle of readings and listen for how God’s “living and active Word” is speaking into our lives today. Read more >
New St. Mary Magdalene Photo Directory!

Exciting news!  St. Mary Magdalene has partnered with Lifetouch photography to create a beautiful, color photo church directory.  Lifetouch works with churches to provide low cost, professional directories.  They are able to do this by offering photo packages for purchase to participants.  No purchase is necessary but St. Mary Magdalene will receive 5% cash back for every photo package purchased.  Make sure you pick up a coupon from the Welcome Table!  Directories will be provided with a suggested donation of $5 per copy to help offset costs to the church.  So, if you have not had individual or family pictures made recently, please consider a package from Lifetouch.

Whether you plan to purchase a package or not, please sign up to to have your picture taken during one of the scheduled sessions so that a photo of you and/or your family will appear in this year’s directory.  Each photo session will take approximately 30 minutes.
There are two sessions remaining which will take place in the church library to maximize participation for our photo directory. The sessions will be:
Sunday July 09 – 11:00am-6:00pm
Sunday July 23 – 11:00am-6:00pm
Click here or on the image above to schedule your session online! Email the church office with questions. Thank you for taking time to participate in this year’s photo directory!

Haiti Scholarship Fundraiser Continues!
The Haiti Family Fair and BBQ was a great way to kick off our annual support of the Colorado Haiti Project and students at St. Paul’s School in Petit Trou, Haiti. So far, SMM parishioners have generously given 20 Konbit Scholarships. We’re halfway to our goal! And the Haitian Market not only raised additional funds, but also provided a chance to own a souvenir from Haitian artists.
Thanks to everyone who attended, brought food, or participated in various lawn games. They were great, and even Joey/Pumpkin/Butterscotch the cat joined in, chasing the bean bags and bocce balls!
Over the next few weeks, the Outreach Committee will continue to raise funds for Konbit scholarships. If you still want to donate but didn’t have a chance yet, please send in a check payable to SMM with “CHP” in the memo line. Each scholarship is $350, and donations of any amount are welcome! Questions? Please contact Mark Christie.

Please contact Sue Crowley with questions or to volunteer.
VBS Supply Drive!
We are in need of supplies for this year’s Vacation Bible School July 19-21. Please contact Sue Crowley to volunteer and check our supplies request and lend us some needed items.
Bake Communion Bread!
We need some more bread bakers!  We need bread for each week in July, August and September. The recipe is simple – making and baking takes about a half hour on Friday evening or early Saturday morning.  Deliver the bread to the church before 10:00 am Saturday.  It is nice too if you present it at the offertory on Sunday Morning, but not necessary.  This is a wonderful expression of service and care for your church family!  Find the recipe here!  Contact Janet Poley to volunteer.
Outdoor Family Plays at St. Aidan’s

Admission to our plays is $10 for adults and free for children under 12.  Buy tickets online here.  Event flyer >
Nogales Mission Update
by Heather Williams
Last Monday, June 12,  a delegation of eleven youth and adults journeyed from St. Mary Magdalene to Nogales, Mexico, to learn about life in the Borderlands. We were hosted by Hogar d’Esperanza y Paz (HEPAC), which works to create a healthy community in the impoverished Bella Vista neighborhood of Nogales, so that “citizens do not feel that their only choice for survival is to risk their lives in the desert in an attempt to immigrate to the United States.”
True to their motto, “Building Bridges Across Borders,” two of our hosts guided us through the border crossing and brought us to HEPAC for a tour of the campus and its programs, after which we were treated to a fiesta with a Sonoran dinner, music, dancing, and a piñata!  Read more >
