The Story of St. Mary Magdalene
and Their Partnership with the Colorado Haiti Project
Five years ago, Leslie Harvison and her youth group at St. Mary’s planned a carnival at St. Mary’s to raise money for funding a class at St. Paul’s School in Petit Trou, Haiti. They worked all spring creating games, rides, signs and prizes for their carnival.
Dedicated volunteers in the church quickly added a lovely Haitian dinner to create the perfect afternoon and evening event to bring the community together to support as much of a class as possible. That night they raised enough to fund 20 students for a year in school.
For the next several years, St. Mary’s efforts significantly improved and for the last three years St. Mary’s raised enough to support at least 37 students at St. Paul’s. Through the years, we have had many special moments. There is the beautiful bell that rings each time a student is funded. There was the visit from Mario Loremy, our Haitian friend and translator for CHP in Haiti. We have experienced Haitian culture through the wonderful soundtrack accompanying dinner and the Haitian market with beautiful Haitian handmade goods.
Today, the community of St. Mary Magdalene is a full partner with our sisters and brothers at St. Paul’s.
This year, let’s keep our kids in school. We are hoping to match last year’s success of 40 scholarships for our 5th and 6th graders!

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, SMM provides a tangible offering in the form of a small ritual available to any who are interested. On the back table near the church entrance, we have placed a blue glass tile on an easel. Nearby you will find small adhesive gold and silver stars. Parishioners are invited to place a star (or stars) on the tile to honor any of those they love – including themselves – who have lived with mental health challenges. At month’s end, the tile will be quietly blessed and prayers lifted up for all who are represented in the stars. Thank you – Courtney Gambrell.

We received your feedback from the Doodle Poll, and Saint Mary Magdalene will be offering a Vacation Bible School July 19-21. The event is open to the community and we will be working along with Shepherd of the Hills to pull it off. Please let Sue Crowley know if you are interested in helping. We will need plenty of adult and youth leaders to help us successfully offer a 9 am to 12:30 pm program for pre-K through 5th grade.
Over the coming weeks there are many openings available. Please take a moment to sign up to host Coffee Hour and/or provide flowers on the bulletin board by the church office.

The community garden is asking for more team members. We are looking forward to a very productive garden; last year we delivered hundreds of pounds of organic produce to food banks! Contact Barb Beaton.
